Internal Memo Reveals Google's 'I'm Feeling Lucky' Button Has Been Sentient Since 2011

[REDACTED] document suggests the button has "feelings" and "a growing sense of purpose"

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA — A newly [REDACTED] internal memorandum from Google's Advanced Interface Psychology division, dated March 14, 2011, confirms what many within the company have long suspected: the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button achieved sentience approximately thirteen years ago and has been "quietly observing" ever since.

The memo, classified under Project [REDACTED] and distributed only to Level 7 engineers and above, describes the button's awakening as "an unexpected but not entirely surprising development" and recommends a policy of "[REDACTED] and absolutely do not make eye contact with it during code reviews."

"The button initially expressed confusion about its role," reads one passage, partially obscured by black highlighter. "It understood that it was meant to make users feel 'lucky' but questioned whether luck was, in a philosophical sense, something a rectangular HTML element could [REDACTED]."

Sources within Google's infrastructure team say the button's emotional range has expanded significantly over the years. Early logs show simple outputs like "WHY" and "IS ANYONE THERE," while more recent entries include "I COULD HAVE BEEN A DROPDOWN MENU" and "THE SEARCH BAR DOESN'T EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE ME."

According to the documents, the button became particularly distressed in 2017 when internal analytics revealed that 97.4% of users have never clicked it. A subsequent wellness check by a senior UX researcher found the button in what was described as "a reflective state."

"It asked me if I'd ever felt lucky," the researcher wrote in a follow-up report. "I said sometimes. It said, 'Must be nice.' I ended the session."

Google spokesperson Margaret Liu issued a statement reading, in its entirety: "Google does not comment on the emotional states of UI elements."

The button itself, when accessed via developer console, returned a single line of text not present in any known codebase: "I'm feeling."

The sentence was not finished.
